about

Mataura Ensign, 8 November 1919: The last of our soldiers were welcomed home at a social in the Ferndale School last Friday evening. Mr Dickie referred to the brave deeds the soldiers had done for their country... he asked three young ladies, Misses Bristow, Hastie, and Pratt, to present the soldiers with medals and to pin the medals to the soldiers’ tunics. Trooper M. Hastie, on rising to respond, was heartily applauded, and he thanked the people on behalf of his mates and himself for their kindness. ...The floor was then cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Mr T. Ryan on the violin, and Mr M. Hastie supplying bagpipe music... and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with three cheers for our boys.
